I smiled as I read my best friend’s status in Facebook stating she couldn’t survive two weeks without household help. Not really quite that surprising. Most of us don’t, in reality. Trust me; it’s not that easy either. But we can all survive through that. With a few tips at hand, let me help you with your domestic demise (word not intended to be derogatory.:D)
Let’s start with the basics…
Food- Did you ever wonder why parents take us for groceries during weekends? It’s not just so that it won’t interrupt school work during school days. In actuality, it’s their free tine. Instead of resting, they use at least two hours of this free time to stock up supplies. Stock up just like school supplies. Not only will it minimize transportation cost, but also will save time in general. Back when my parents left me on my own, I was given 200 (or 250 sometimes) hundred for my weekly supply of food. I know it’s mighty unhealthy to stock up on canned goods and instant noodles, but they fit in the budget and well, don’t need too much prep time. If you’re more inclined to cooking, you can buy ground pork, choice cuts, and tenderloins by a quarter of a kilo, and some vegetables. You’re eating alone. So, if you bought too much, there’s still the week after to consume it. But, PLEASE! Never eat stale food. If it smells rancid, throw it out. Especially if it’s milk: p
Laundry- OH BOY! A student would run out of clothes by Wednesday. If you’re lucky, you’re condo offers laundry services. But don’t despair if they don’t, that’s what laundry shops are for. Survey which laundry services near you: look at the prices and the quality of their services. It doesn’t necessarily take a whole day to look around. Google Maps or the internet advertises shops. Locking in your location and trying some sites like Foursquare or other location-based sites can help you look for shops too…or a simple stroll with a friend can do it. Sometimes, you need to test different shops out. But if you already found a place and if they deliver, you’re one happy camper. Worried about folding your clothes? Most laundry shops take care of that. They’ll even press your clothes for you. It is quite important to note that you should inventory your clothes before sending them out. You don’t want missing trousers and blouses.
Cleaning your unit- the perpetual pain in the neck. Well, if you’re a clean freak, you’ll be cleaning everyday. But if you’re not that obsessed with cleanliness and you’re very busy with projects and homework, try micro-organizing. The sight of it won’t be pretty; Piles of books, papers, and other school-related mess. But at least you’ll know where you placed your stuff. Allocate a certain spot in your desk for one subject. Remember you have the whole unit to yourself. Clusters are easier to clean out once finals are done or when you’re not that busy anymore. Just remember that trash can is where the trash belongs. Don’t be lazy when throwing out the trash. You don’t want to be bitten by bugs and smelling like a dog after a week. Vacuuming and wiping dust off can be done during weekends. Try not to forget to sweep the floor once in a while. J
Security- my parents would call me in the morning and evening to check if I indeed locked the doors. Maybe because I was 16 back then…or maybe they’re just paranoid. But still, we cannot sacrifice security. Lock all the necessary doors but please, don’t forget the keys. It will save you the embarrassment of calling your landlady or security department and asking for spare keys.
Recreation- between schoolwork and all these chores to do, you’ll think “the heck! This girl must be kidding me?! What do you mean by recreation, Therene?!” Easy as one word: Chill! Dangit! I know it’s exhausting to do be super student, much more live on your own. But please remember, you’re alone; the boss of your own self. Except school and parents, no one tells you when to do things. On weekends, you can wake up extremely late, turn on the music loud (given the volume is enough not to receive complaints from neighbors), and relax. After you’ve exhausted yourself relaxing, go do those chores and school work you’re lagging on. Guess who’ll have the power of a horse? You, of course. As long as your recreation is guilt-free, go do it.
Yes, I know I didn’t cover everything yet. So ask away and I’ll start on it. No, you may not want to throw a party at your unit but a sleepover is good. Lol
